Lincoln Park Zoo has developed a unique relationship with the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) and USDA APHIS AC (United States Department of Agriculture, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Animal Care) in the creation of ZAHN (Zoo Animal Health Network), part of the Davee Center for Epidemiology and Endocrinology at Lincoln Park Zoo. In anticipating the growing risk of emerging diseases such as avian influenza, Newcastle disease, chronic wasting disease, foot and mouth disease, monkeypox and emerging issues, Lincoln Park Zoo and USDA developed this network that has the capacity, infrastructure and support to monitor emerging diseases in the future. ZAHN acts as an early warning system to the nation’s animal health center by identifying and characterizing these diseases should they emerge in the zoo population.
