The Avian Influenza surveillance program is a joint effort between the USDA the AZA and your State Veterinarian In Charge. This page highlights the steps neccessary for institutional participatation.

PARTICIPATION

Before you consider participating in this Surveillance Program, please note that an effective relationship must exist between your institution and your State Veterinarian (SV) and Area Veterinarian in Charge (AVIC). Your working relationship with these regulatory officials is important not only for this effort, but to manage any outbreak of a Foreign Animal Disease in your zoo. Zoo Animal Health Network (ZAHN) adminstrators of this plan are happy to assist you as needed in discussing the benefits of program participation with these officials. It is our intent to have all parties informed of the benefits, potential outcomes and responsibilities in participation.

BEFORE PARTICIPATING

  • Prospective Participant Letter

    • This letter gives a brief overview of the system

  • USDA APHIS AZA Management Guidelines for Avian Influenza Zoological Parks Exhibitors Surveillance Plan

    • The Surveillance Plan is a detailed compendium of the system

  • Participation Agreement

    • This aggreement details the institution's committment to participate in the program  

  • Material Transfer Agreement

    • An agreement detailing the shipping of serum and plasma samples to ZAHN

  • Outbreak Management Plan

    • Outline procedures and control measures to be used for both low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreaks  

  • Collection Manual

    • To be used as a quick reference guide to assist zoos in collecting samples for the USDA AZA influenza surveillance plan  

After receiving these documents carefully read and consider the program in its entirety Talk to program administrators at ZAHN. Contact your State and Area Veterinarians in Charge and inform them of your request to participate in this program. They need to approve your participation in this program. Program Administrators and Regional Coordinators are available to assist.

Upon enrollment in the program your institution will receive a Participation Packet from Zoo Animal Health Network which will contain:

  • Two different sample collection forms, one for swabs/tissues, one for serum Barcode stickers Barcode scanner

  • A copy of the participation checklist

  • Collection Manual

  • Institution code for submission of samples from any wildlife

  • Institution login and password in order to view and print test results and reports
